It's a stupid question but there's one thing which annoys me everytime I do the extraction with solvent heavier than water (e.g. DCM). And this thing is the last drop of solvent which is contrary to the law of gravity stays on the top of water layer. Are there any useful ways to get rid of this last drop? What I usually do are:

  1. whirling sep funnel
  2. messing with spatula

Ha ha ha, I know this problem. Just do a re-extraction, or let some of the water out or add a trace of n-octanol to break up the surface tension. Or add some brine.

actually, brine makes it even worse because of lesser density difference. – tlp Sep 3 at 11:39
try saturated ammonium chloride, or change the solvent to toluene? – quintus Sep 3 at 12:41
